Resveratrol Supplements - Potential Side Effects
If you have been paying attention to the media reports about resveratrol supplements recently and have seen reports on the studies and research that have been conducted thus far, you are probably excited about the possibilities of this product. From anti-aging to weight loss to the fight against cancer, it seems like there is nothing that this little antioxidant can’t do. However, the fact that its discovery is relatively new means that some care should be taken before jumping first into consuming bottle after bottle of supplemental pills. There may be potential side effects involved, as with any overconsumption of products.
First of all, resveratrol is something that occurs naturally in the skin of grapes, huckleberries, and other botanicals. This means that it is meant to be consumed by humans. However, now it has been chemically synthesized and put into a consumer-friendly capsule that purports to extend its effects and make sure that the benefits are made more apparent for users. These include the fight against cancer, as well as its anti-aging properties. It has been shown to reduce wrinkles when included in one’s diet, as well as having an impact on weight loss.
It seems that resveratrol supplements work for several different reasons, including the fact that they help lower blood sugar. The other major way that this compound works in the body is by affecting hormonal levels. It lowers estrogen while raising testosterone levels slightly, which seems to be the defining mechanism behind the weight loss, in particular. This is where the slight potential for side effects comes in, but mainly if the product is consumed in extremely large quantities. The long term effects are not yet known, which is also a small cause for concern if you are planning on taking this supplement for any prolonged period of time. Because it is so new, the true risks are not known at this time. While there may not be any, this is a risk into which all users enter when using this product.
As with any nutritional supplement, if considering beginning a program involving the intake of resveratrol supplements, it’s highly recommended to speak to a healthcare professional first to see if there are any personal issues that may arise. This could include an allergy to other compounds found in wine or grapes, and the close supervision of an untested product. Overall however, it seems that early results point to a safe and effective new product that could be one of the most exciting new advances in preventive care in quite some time.

Great article, incorporating resveratrol into my diet has allowed me to feel happy and healthier. However a diet is not enough. Exercise is also very important. This is why I have also started swimming on a regular basis.
