Resveratrol Grape – Wine vs. Supplements
The benefits of the resveratrol grape are not in dispute at the moment, with enough serious studies having been conducted recently to link this compound found in grape skin to weight loss and the prevention of cancer. Now the question has become more an issue of what is the best type of way to ingest more of this seemingly miraculous product of nature. It has been said throughout the years in folk medicine that wine helps keep up health levels, and maybe now we know why. This is one way of ingesting the resveratrol that is so important, and also an enjoyable method.
Some studies however have suggested that the levels of resveratrol found naturally in a serving of wine or grapes are not high enough to have a significant impact on health. They suggest that resveratrol grape intake must be at a higher level that can only be found in the extracted versions available in supplements. Supplements also have the benefit of being fortified with other vitamins, making them an all around health booster that can indeed be beneficial on a number of different levels. In addition, alcohol intake has been linked to the formation of some cancers, including breast cancer, so if you are not able to drink in moderation this is not a valid form of ingestion.
One drawback to resveratrol supplements vs. wine is that the higher levels of resveratrol grape have been linked to side effects in some users. These can include a jittery feeling such as what one feels having had too much caffeine, as well as a loss of appetite. Other anecdotal side effects that were reported include joint pain in some users, tendonitis, and numbness or tingling in the extremities. It seems that the high levels of resveratrol that are beneficial in the sense that they help fight cancer can also have a few drawbacks.
All of these pros and cons of the different types of resveratrol grape supplements should be carefully considered before beginning any sort of program of regular use. In addition, one should consult with a healthcare professional to see if there are any other drawbacks that may be particular to your own health history. It certainly seems like a good idea and a safe bet however to simply add a handful of red-skinned grapes to your diet on a daily basis if possible, because this is free both of side effects and of the detrimental aspects of alcohol.
