Red Wine Resveratrol – Battle against Cancer
In addition to its ability to help bring out the flavors in a meal, it now seems that red wine has another powerful benefit, and that is due to the antioxidant known as resveratrol that is found in some varieties, as well as in the skin of grapes that are used to make it. Red wine resveratrol has been shown to contain some powerful anti-aging properties, including the ability to smooth over wrinkles, assist with weight loss, and other youth-enhancing activities such as these. More importantly however, is its seeming ability to help in the fight against cancer.
A number of studies in laboratory mice have indicated that red wine resveratrol is capable of helping fight the free radicals that are responsible for the oxidation process that causes cells to become cancerous at times. Resveratrol stops this reaction in its tracks, saving the cells and helping prevent cancer from forming or spreading to further parts of the body. Because of these trials, that show so much beginning promise, this is now being studied in a wider scope within humans.
One of the questions that are being probed at the moment in research is whether red wine resveratrol is enough to fight cancer, or if more concentrated supplements of resveratrol are a better idea. This is still out in the open right now, with no clear answers. There have been studies however that go back to the 1990’s showing that those cultures that drink wine as a regular part of the meal, such as the French, have a lower rate of heart disease than others, despite their high-fat diets. This phenomenon, known as the “French paradox” can now partially be explained with resveratrol. Not only heart disease but cancer can be affected by this powerful little antioxidant.
Because the research into red wine resveratrol is still in its infancy, there are no conclusive results available as to what the exact benefits are in drinking red wine. However, anecdotal evidence and preliminary trials show that this could have some far-reaching benefits, so it seems smart to pour yourself a glass of wine from time to time with your meal, especially if it is something you enjoy. Naturally, drinking in moderation is recommended, because the negative effects of alcohol could negate any good deeds that the resveratrol is performing. It’s a delicate balance that must be struck within the body, and one which many people enjoy working with.
